How Window Film Works

Often we get asked how window film works. Today’s window film technology is used for many different applications. Window film is a laminate of strong polyester and metalized coatings bonded by adhesives. A scratch resistant coating is applied on one side; a mounting adhesive layer and a protective release liner are applied to the other side.

When the release liner is removed, the side of the film with the adhesive is applied to the interior surface of the glass. Film can be clear, colored, or patterned to blend with various design schemes. Various thicknesses are available for solar, safety, or security applications.

Solar radiation from the sun is divided into 3 components; visible light we can see, and infrared and ultraviolet rays which we can only feel. As solar radiation strikes a piece of glass, window film blocks harmful UV rays and regulates the levels of heat and light passing through the glass. The amount of heat and light rejected is all dependent on the type of window film selected.

Energy-saving window film enhances the solar and thermal performance of a building’s windows. It does this by reducing excessive solar heat gain – reducing cooling loads and peak demand. In addition, low emissivity (or low-e) films improve the insulating properties of windows – offering increased cooling season savings and the added advantage of heating season savings.

Window Tinting is an all-purpose way for a home or business to gain privacy, reduce solar glare, and save money.

In fact, most Bay Area home and business owners find that professional window tinting pays for itself in within the first year or two. Say goodbye to faded furnishings and that irritating glare on the television or computer screen, without having to sacrifice the view outside.

Increase Privacy Using Professional Window Tinting

Window tinting can serve a variety of functions, one of which is privacy. While cutting out up to 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, reflective window tinting can be used to prevent outsiders from having an unobstructed view inside. Multiple studies have shown the benefits of natural light in terms of vision and mood. While blinds and window coverings often allow privacy, they cut off the view of the outside world and can give a home or commercial building a cave like ambiance.

Window tinting can be graded to allow the maximum amount of sunlight in. That way, whether the film is used in a home or business, everyone inside gets to enjoy the views and benefit from natural lighting without the irritating glare or a feeling of exposure. Passersby will get the benefit of seeing their own reflection.

Window Tinting Cuts Down on Damaging UV Rays

Bay Area homes and businesses actually spend up to 10% more on monthly energy bills during AC season. This is because passive solar heat is a powerful force. In addition to added heat and energy consumption, UV rays can cause damage carpeting, furniture, and valuable works of art. These can be expensive to replace due to fading. By applying tinted window film to a home or office, owners save valuable money. Plus, tinted window film can also be used to help insulate windows, which means extra energy savings during the winter months as well. These valuable savings can help tinted window film pay for itself in just a matter of months.

Tinted Window Film Can Protect a Home or Office

Consider these savings as well: Has graffiti or vandalism been a problem? Ask us about anti graffiti window film. It peels right off, leaving the unblemished window surface below. It also protects windows from etching. Worried about the damage that can be done during an earthquake? Security window film can protect the interior of your home or office from intruders, whether the intruders are potential burglars, natural disasters, or the occasional neighborhood fly ball. Tinted security window film will cause intruders to think again after they break a window to gain entry to a private home or business. The security film holds the broken glass shards in place, which prevents the intruder from entering quickly. The film will serve as the window’s structure until the window can be safely replaced.
